Project "Duffel"

PELC Foundation's primary undertaking at the present, Project "Nepal" is the first Foundation's attempt at promoting ecologically-sound activities in financially underprivileged countries, by assisting locally organized educational, agricultural, and economical efforts. Nepal is a country of immense cultural wealth and topographical beauty, yet it is in dire need of socioeconomic growth. There is a real danger of excessive commercial development under foreign influence catering to local greed, on the expense of natural resources, the environment, culture, and traditional village life. The Foundation's goal is to empower dedicated local non-profit organizations in their quest to educate the people in remote farming villages, to establish community service institutions, to enhance the quality of life, to sponsor sustainable farming with export potential, to develop health care facilities and medical clinics, and to preserve the environment and cultural heritage. PELC's partner in these efforts is CCODER, Center for Community Development and Research. This non-governmental organization was established in Nepal 20 years ago to help rural Nepalese escape poverty, while adhering to sound ecological, economical, and environmental principles.

Project "Nepal" concentrates on assisting CCODER's following activities:

  • Developing community-based tourism, with emphasis on cultural exchange and education, and with even distribution of tourism-derived income among community service organizations, schools, and clinics.
  • Establishing means for providing educational support and for collecting of funds necessary to accomplish CCODER's goals and cover administrative expenses.
  • Promoting of PELC's mission via widespread education about the importance of ecological, cultural, and social preservation and sustainability, internationally.
  • Supporting the establishment of medical facilities in remote areas in Nepal that are currently deprived of access to qualified health care practitioners. This includes seminars and classes in the arts of healing, which are offered by experienced clinicians to local practitioners, as well as therapeutic services administered directly to the villagers by international "traveling healers."
  • Providing assistance in the creation of ayurvedic herbal farming industry in the mountainous regions of Nepal, by developing a market for such medicinal herbs and establishing parameters for supply and demand economics appropriate for this region of the world.
